4K IPTV: What It Takes to Get a 4K Picture
4K appears on nearly every IPTV listing, including ours. It is also the claim most likely to disappoint, not because anyone is lying, but because four separate things have to be 4K at the same time and most households have at least one that is not.
This page is about which one is usually yours, and how to find out in a few minutes rather than by guessing.
The short answer
A 4K picture needs a 4K stream, a connection fast enough to carry it, a device that can decode it, and a screen that can show it. The weakest of the four decides what you see. Everything upstream of the weak link is wasted.
In most homes the limit is the device or the connection rather than the subscription, which is worth knowing before you change the subscription.
What 4K actually means
4K in television is ultra-high definition: 3840 by 2160 pixels, defined alongside 7680 by 4320 in the ITU's parameter recommendation for ultra-high definition television systems (Recommendation ITU-R BT.2020).
That is exactly four times the pixel count of 1080p, which is 1920 by 1080. Four times the pixels is the part people know. The part that matters more is that those pixels have to be delivered, and delivery is measured in bitrate rather than in resolution.
Resolution is not the same as quality, and this is the whole misunderstanding
A stream can be 3840 by 2160 and still look worse than a good HD one.
Resolution is how many pixels are in the frame. Bitrate is how much data is spent describing them each second. Squeeze a 4K frame into too little data and the encoder has to throw detail away, which shows up as smearing on fast movement, blocking in dark scenes, and a general softness that looks like the picture is slightly out of focus.
So "is it 4K" is the wrong question and "does it look right on my screen" is the right one. A well-encoded HD stream on a good screen beats a starved 4K one, and your eyes will tell you before any specification does.
The four links, and how to find your weak one
The stream
Not everything is produced in 4K, and nothing can add detail that was never recorded. A great deal of content is made in HD and stays that way, on any service, so a mixed lineup is normal rather than a fault.

The connection
A 4K stream carries several times the data of an HD one, so this is the link that most often gives way, and it gives way in a specific manner: it plays, then stalls, then recovers at lower quality.
Two things matter more than the headline speed. Whether the speed is there continuously, because a stream needs it for the whole film rather than for a ten-second test. And whether it survives the trip across your home, which is usually the real problem.
Wifi is where most of it is lost. The 5GHz band is considerably faster than 2.4GHz and considerably worse at passing through walls, so a device two rooms from the router may be quietly using the slower one. The device
This is the most common limit and the one people check last.
Plenty of streaming sticks and set-top boxes are HD-only. They will happily run the player, accept your details and show you a picture, and that picture will be 1080p regardless of what the stream contains. Nothing announces this. The app does not complain and the picture does not look broken, it just never improves.
Check the model rather than the box it came in. A device bought as "smart" or "HD ready" some years ago is very unlikely to be a 4K decoder. Our setup guides cover the devices we support, and the player apps comparison sets out which apps run where.
The screen
Obvious, and still worth stating: a 1080p telly shows 1080p. It will accept a 4K input from a modern device and scale it down.
One thing that is less obvious. Screen size and viewing distance decide whether you could see the difference even if everything else were perfect. On a smaller set watched from across a room, 4K and a good HD picture are genuinely hard to tell apart, which is worth knowing before spending anything to chase it.
How to check what you are actually getting
Four steps, cheapest first.
- Check the screen. Its model number and a search settle it in a minute.
- Check the device. Same method. If it is HD-only, nothing else on this list will change your picture.
- Check the cable path. A 4K signal at higher frame rates needs an HDMI input and cable that support it. Old cables in a drawer are the usual culprit, and swapping one is free if you have a spare.
- Check the connection at the device, not at the router. Run a speed test on the device that is actually playing, in the room it lives in.

Common questions
Will a different player app give me a better picture?
No. Player apps decode what they are given and hand it to the screen. Choosing between them is about the interface, the guide layout and which platform they run on, not about picture quality. The comparison sets out the differences that are real.
My picture keeps dropping to a lower quality and going back up
That is the connection rather than the subscription, and the behaviour is the player protecting the stream from stopping altogether. It would rather show you a softer picture than stop. Our buffering guide takes the causes in order.
Does a faster subscription tier give me a better picture?
Not on ours. The tiers on our plans page count how many streams can play at the same moment, not what quality each one is. Every tier gets the same picture.
Is 4K worth it on a smaller telly?
Often not, and that is a legitimate answer rather than a modest one. Below a certain size, at ordinary viewing distances, the difference is very hard to see. Spending on the connection or on a device that does not stutter usually buys a more noticeable improvement than chasing the resolution number.
Everything is 4K and it still looks soft
Check the cable and the input first, since a link that quietly falls back is the usual cause. If all four are confirmed and it still looks wrong, send us the specifics and we will look at the stream from our end.
